Wood Fired Ethiopian Coffee Set
This handmade stoneware coffee set is inspired by the traditional Ethiopian coffee set of my childhood, with a few of my own tweaks and changes thrown in. It is fired in a wood kiln, where flame and ash mark each piece throughout a 4-day firing. The unglazed exterior has a warm, toasted surface, with rust, terracotta, and honey tones that deepen where the fire touched the clay. The interiors and rims are finished in a soft white crackle glaze, a smooth, creamy contrast to the textured clay surface.
The 16-Piece set includes:
- Jebena-style coffee pot (1): A tall, slender neck rises from a rounded body, with a pointed spout and a long, sweeping arched handle. It is a sculptural centerpiece as well as a pouring vessel. (Dimensions: 26 cm L from handle to tip of spout, 14 cm W, 27 cm H) Do not apply directly to flame or stove element. This piece is for serving coffee, not brewing it.
- Handleless coffee cups (6): Small stacking cups with a white crackle glazed lip and interior over a speckled, wood-fired base. They sit comfortably in the hand and nest neatly into the saucers. (Dimensions: 8 cm D, 5 cm H)
- Saucers (6): Shallow, glazed stackable saucers. (Dimensions: 11 cm D, 2.5 cm H)
- Sugar bowl with lid (2): A round, squat pot with a fitted lid and a small knob handle. (Dimensions: 11 cm D, 9 cm H)
- Creamer (1): A rounded pitcher with a pinched spout and a looped handle, glazed inside. (Dimensions: 8.5 cm W, 11.5 cm L from handle to tip of spout)
Details
- Material: Stoneware clay
- Glaze: White crackle glaze on interiors and rims. The fine crackle lines are a natural, intentional part of the glaze.
- Food safe: Safe for serving coffee, tea, and other hot beverages.
- Finish: Raw, textured clay exteriors. Every piece is one of a kind, and colour and flashing vary from piece to piece.
Care
Hand washing is recommended to protect the finish and the wood-fired surface. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Because the exterior is unglazed, dry the pieces thoroughly before storing.
